UPI QR codes with a fixed amount: when to use one, and when it costs you payments

Putting the amount in the code saves the customer typing it and stops wrong amounts. It also means the code is wrong the day the price changes — and a payment code cannot be a dynamic redirect.

WHAT THIS ARTICLE DOES AND DOES NOT TELL YOUThe amount field (am) puts the price in the code; payment apps show it to the payer to confirm.Fixed amounts suit one bill, one ticket or one fee — anything priced once.A payment QR is read by the UPI app itself, so it cannot be a redirect you edit later. A price change means a reprint. It does not give conversion figures. We have none we could stand behind.

What the amount field does

A UPI QR code can carry an amount in the am field — rupees, up to two decimal places. When it does, the payment app opens with that amount filled in for the payer to confirm. When it does not, the payer types the amount, which is where wrong amounts and the conversation at the counter come from.

Where a fixed amount is right

Anything priced once and paid once: an invoice, an event ticket, a school fee, a deposit, a printed bill at a restaurant table. The code and the amount belong to one transaction, and there is nothing to change later. Generated per bill, a fixed-amount code is the most error-proof way to take a UPI payment.

One price, one payment, one code — that is what a fixed amount is for.

Where it costs you

On anything that stays up while prices move: a standee at the counter, a menu, a sticker on a product shelf. The day the price changes, every printed code asks for the old price. The payer either pays the wrong amount or stops to ask, and either way the code has made the payment harder than a plain one would have.

There is no editing your way out. A payment QR code is read by the UPI app directly — it is not a web link the app follows — so it cannot point at a redirect you change later the way a dynamic code can. For a counter, use a code with no amount and let the payer enter it, or generate a fixed-amount code per bill at the till.

A short decision

Ask whether the code is for one transaction or for many. One transaction: fix the amount. Many transactions at the same price that will never change: fixing it is fine. Many transactions at prices that change: leave the amount out.

What this article is not

Field behaviour follows NPCI’s UPI linking specification; it makes no claim about a particular app.

It gives no figures for completion or error rates.

It is not payment advice. We generate payment links; we are not a payment service provider.

Make a UPI code, with or without an amount

The amount is validated to two decimal places, and the payee is read back before you download.
