QR codes as artwork that still scan
The code is made the normal way; AI paints around it. Every result is checked before you can download it.

Artwork around the code, never instead of it
Your code is made the normal way
Your link is encoded exactly as you typed it, at the highest error correction. AI never writes or changes what the code says.
AI paints around it
By default the AI makes the background and the code is set on a contrast-safe card, so the art cannot damage the symbol.
Every result is decoded first
A result that does not decode to exactly your link is thrown away, not shown to you. You choose from the ones that scan.
What an AI QR code is
An AI QR code is an ordinary, scannable QR code with generated artwork around it or through it. The code part is the same as any other: your link, encoded exactly as you typed it, following the QR standard (ISO/IEC 18004). The AI only makes the picture. That is the difference between art a phone can read and a picture that merely looks like a QR code.
Around the code, or through it
There are two ways to place the art. Around the code — the default — puts the artwork in the background and sets the code on a contrast-safe card, so the art cannot damage the symbol. Through the code blends the artwork into the modules themselves; it is more striking, it costs more to make, and it is the placement most likely to produce a result that does not scan — which is why every result is decoded before you see it.
Why every art code uses error correction H
A QR code carries redundancy so it can be read when part of it is damaged. Level H, the highest, lets a reader recover about 30% of the code’s data. Artwork spends some of that budget, so art codes are always made at H. The cost is size: H needs more modules for the same link, which is why a long link can be too long for an art code. A dynamic code fixes that, because its short link always fits.
When an art code is the right choice
- Good fits: posters, packaging, menus, event signage and social posts — places where the code is part of the design and people choose to scan it.
- Think twice: very small prints, dark or glossy surfaces, and counters where people scan in a hurry. A plain code is the safer choice where every second matters.
- Not at all: anything where the code’s content must be exact and checked by eye, such as a payment. The art never changes what a code says, but a plain code is the clearest one to verify.
Before you print, scan the downloaded file from a printed proof at the size it will be used, in the light it will be used in. The print size calculator tells you how large the modules will be at that size.
AI QR code questions
Does the AI change my link?
No. Your link is encoded by the same QR encoder as every other code on this site, exactly as you typed it. The AI makes only the picture, and a result that does not decode to exactly your link is discarded.
Will it scan?
Every result is decoded before it is shown to you, and one that does not read back as your link is thrown away. That checks the image file; scan a printed proof before a large print run, because paper, ink and light matter too.
How much does it cost?
Art around the code costs 3 AI credits; art through the code costs 6. A free account includes 20 credits, once. Paid plans include credits every month, and credit packs never expire.
Can I change where the code points after printing?
Yes, if you make the art around a dynamic code. Its short link can be pointed somewhere new at any time without reprinting, and it always fits within an art code’s size limit.
How many styles are there?
More than 140, in 40 groups, in the AI studio. This page shows a few from each of the first twelve groups.
